BIG UNIT MAKING PROGRESS (2:23 p.m. ET)
Diamondbacks starter Randy Johnson continues to make progress in his return from back surgery. The 44-year-old southpaw threw for the fourth time this spring, throwing approximately 55 pitches on Thursday morning with no setbacks. "I'm not really going to push it by just throwing batting practice," said Johnson, who threw mostly fastballs. "What I got out of it was extending my pitch count, and I saw hitters in the batters box. We'll see how I feel tomorrow and go from there." Manager Bob Melvin said the team will sit down and decide the next step, but it is likely Johnson will have the same type of throwing session in three to four days. "He looked really good again," Melvin said. "He didn't feel he had to step on it or rush anything.
Finally, we all agree: devolution is a process, not an event
FOR ONCE the hype was justified. "The most important debate the Scottish parliament has ever engaged in," said the Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie during last week's debate on setting up a Constitutional Commission to extend home rule. She could be right. All the major forces in Scottish politics are now united as never before on the need to give Holyrood more oomph. Even the SNP is part of the consensus, though Labour is trying to lock them out. For hacks like me who have watched the battle for Scotland for more than 20 years, this is hard to believe. Ultra-unionists like the Scottish Tories joining forces on the constitution with the ultra-devolutionist Liberal Democrats? Surely not. Michael Forsyth would turn in his grave, were he dead. Annabel Goldie as a tartan revolutionary? Well, she delivered a powerful speech in last week's debate, admitting past mistakes and conceding that home rule is a process that "dwarfs party politics".
Married to the Mob
When Jacobs, who was always a favourite for sportswriters because of his quotable quotes and the colourful stories that he provided, died nine years later; most of the world press paid tribute to him with his most memorable three words. These words won't have sounded outlandish on Sunday when Aussie sportswriters scampered for words to explain the whacking of Ponting and Co at the WACA, only that they didn't fit the context. "We wuz had!" said Courier Mail in Australia. The wordplay,... .
Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track marks 50th with $50,000 race
The $50,000 Greyhound Classic in Bonita Springs on Saturday night was either the greatest night in the history of Southwest Florida dog racing or simply the latest ugly chapter in the long history of a sport that some say tolerates animal abuse, encourages binge drinking and feeds gambling addictions. In the end, it was 2-1 underdog “Invincible Son" that streaked away with a win in the featured race of the evening at Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track. Earlier in the day, a small group of people gathered outside the track to protest what they claim is inhumane treatment of the dogs. “They were saying that a lot of these dogs are abused, but my girlfriend works for an animal services organization and she said a lot of them get adopted," said racing fan Adam Andrew of Fort Myers, owner of various Ralph's Seafood locations throughout Lee County.
