It appeared on Feb. 4, 1948, not exactly the season for fresh corn. But the six-ingredient recipe was meant to be a budget meal -- World War II was just behind us -- and so we let readers know it was fine to substitute canned for fresh, leftover for just-bought. "The sausages may be purchased for the occasion or be the leftovers from a previous dinner service," the article, written by one Martha Reynolds, assured. "The same is true of the corn -- one cupful of the whole kernel type -- may be canned, quick-frozen or leftover." Today's home cook would surely still appreciate such tips. This month marks the 60th anniversary of the Sun-Times. Fasten your bibs as we look back on six decades of food in Chicago. .
The right way: When the truth gets in the way, ignore it
But extreme right wingers everywhere enjoy believing in things they know are not true. It spares them the ordeal of thinking for themselves and taking responsibility for what they know, which explains the success of conservative talk radio. The Dittoheads always instill in my imagination the following scenario: Stardate 5345.6. I see the bridge of the Starship Enterprise and the following conversation taking place: Spock: Jim, the Klingons are attacking. Kirk: Yes, Clinton sold them Earth's defense plans. Spock: But, Jim, Clinton hasn't been around for over three thousand years. Kirk: Spock, don't bother me with details. We must find a way to overcome our newly designed Photon Torpedoes, the ones Hillary Clinton stole and sold to the evil Klingon Empire; her relatives, no doubt.
Clinton's confidence dwindles as aides face her campaign's possible ...
The US is in a serious crisis now. A strong and capable leader is more needed than ever. One should remember history. Germany elected Adolf Hitler in the aftermath of horrible hyper-inflation and wide-spread domestic discontent. What Hitler did to Germany and to Europe is not something to easily write off as "old" world. It would be too costly to write off Obama one day. It would be just too late. G W Bush already made enough serious mistakes, thanks to those who voted him in, and the Supreme Court judges who voted him in. .
Letter: Plan should focus on water
The Sierra Club, Yahi Group, has been following and speaking out about water issues in Butte County for several years. The club recognizes, therefore, that it is crucial that Butte County highlight the importance of water in its General Plan process. The best way to do that is to specify that there be a "water element," i.e., a major topic that is separately examined, and not just "submerged," in a general environmental examination of the county. As the General Plan director Tim Snelling has often said, there will be filters that will be used to examine any new developments in the county. What a better filter to use than one of our most important public trusts, i.e., our water — whether it is in our precious watersheds or in the priceless Tuscan aquifer. We need to study just how much water is needed before allowing more to be sent south.
Giants not alone in hunt for Hall
According to someone familiar with the team's opinion of Hall, who requested anonymity because the Giants haven't commented publicly on the possible trade, the Giants view him as a player whose passion and enthusiasm -- which often lead to his off-field comments -- are his best traits on the field. "I'm definitely outspoken, I'm definitely emotional," Hall said. "But I think in this game, especially at the position I play, you've got to be that. You've got to have a little bit of something to you. You're on an island and you're guarding some of the fiercest athletes in the world." The person familiar with the Giants' opinion of Hall said the team has been watching film of Hall and gathering as much information on him since the middle of this past season, when he publicly criticized former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino and suggested he wanted to be traded.
