| Breathe deeply: Cleaner air starts with you
In this third Green Living installment of Health & Wellness, the focus is on the air around us. This is fitting, since part one focused on water conservation and part two discussed ways to protect soil. The triple punch of conserving water, protecting soil and purifying air will yield the most effective reduction on your carbon footprint. Carbon dioxide has earned its bad reputation for being a greenhouse gas that is running rampant. Excess CO2 creates an insulating blanket that prevents heat from the sun from bouncing off the surface of the planet back out into space, causing a cascading accumulation of side effects. It is true that the composition of our atmosphere fluctuates over time, and in the distant past when there was more CO2 in the air, plants were more abundant and animals were bigger.
Steve Carson's 'Outdoors' column: BASSmasters Classic is competitive ...
Sometimes referred to as the Super Bowl of bass fishing, the BASSmasters Classic began its three-day run today on Lake Hartwell in Greenville, S.C. With a $500,000 prize for the first-place finisher, the purse is not quite as big as the $1 million-plus available to the winner of the Bisbee's Black and Blue marlin tournament in Cabo San Lucas. However, far more anglers consider this event to be worthy of becoming a spectator. The contest even merits 13 hours of television programming this weekend on ESPN2. Perhaps not surprisingly, the 110-angler field contains several current and former Northern California fishermen. One of the favorites to win the overall title is undoubtedly Skeet Reese of Auburn, who also happens to be the reigning Bass Anglers Sportsman Society "Angler of the Year." Also on the roster are Greg Gutierrez of Red Bluff; Oroville native Gary Klein (currently of Weatherford, Texas); Chico State graduate Mark Tyler (currently of Scottsdale, Ariz.); Fred Roumbanis of Auburn; Ish Monroe of Hughson; and Jared Lintner of Arroyo Grande.

What does 2006 have in store? (part one)
Pure national interest and security are not viable. By acting as if the world system of states was that of fifty years ago, Im afraid, some governments in 2006 will drive us deeper into chaos and disorder. back to top Neal Ascherson: Fears and hopes For 2006, I fear: That the hopeful people of Iraq who go out to vote against all the threats of death and destruction will see their country fall apart into new destruction created by foreign meddling and megalomaniac clerics; That the provincial fools who rule Iran will betray their long-suffering subjects, by driving the country into follies which will tempt Bush and the neocons to strike at them; That Israel will press forward with the colonisation of the West Bank, until yet another Palestinian uprising and yet another wave of Israeli military reprisals postpones Palestinian statehood; That China's growing demand for energy, raw materials and food will overwhelm all the world's efforts to conserve the rainforests and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels; That the European Union will fail to replace its abortive constitution or to reconstruct the budget crippled in the fiasco of the British presidency by Tony Blair's unforgivable obsession with the rebate, and will begin to drift backwards towards disintegration; That the Blair government, faced with more illegal outrages by the Bush presidency, will once again fail to protest and shame us with another display of hand-wringing servility.
