| Sun to unveil stackable data-centre boxes
Giving a new meaning to the term "portable computer", Sun plans to sell a working data centre packaged in a stackable shipping container. On Tuesday, the company plans to unveil "Project Blackbox", which tucks several racks of computing gear, along with the necessary power and cooling equipment, into a standard shipping container 8ft wide, 8ft tall and 20ft long. Jonathan Schwartz, the server and software company's new chief executive, is scheduled to promote the idea in a car park outside the company's California facilities. Sun believes the technology will appeal to customers who are running out of space in their current data centres, providing backup computing gear for disaster recovery services, or setting up operations in remote locations, said Dave Douglas, Sun's vice president of advanced technology.
Rice says Hamas rocket attacks must stop
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Thursday that Hamas rocket attacks against Israel "need to stop," demanding an end to the escalating violence that has rocked the Gaza Strip and set back U.S. efforts to promote a Mideast peace deal. Her appeal came after she met for an hour with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who also was visiting Japan."I am concerned about the humanitarian conditions there and innocent people in Gaza who are being hurt," Rice told reporters following her meeting with Olmert. "We have to remember that the Hamas activities there are responsible for what has happened in Gaza - the illegal coup that they led against the legitimate institutions of the Palestinian Authority. It is very clear where this started."The Rice-Olmert meeting came just hours after Israeli aircraft blasted Hamas government offices and metal shops in the Gaza Strip late Wednesday, killing a baby and wounding more than 30 people in a retaliatory strike after a militant rocket killed an Israeli college student. The bloodshed fed worries about a new outbreak of heavy fighting between the Israeli army and militants in the Gaza Strip.Despite the violence, Rice is planning to visit the region next week to meet with Palestinian and Israeli leaders to discuss the push to negotiate a peace accord, which could lead to a Palestinian state one day.Rice said she assured Olmert of U.S.

Howard's $10M win in arbitration sets new high-water mark
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Everywhere Ryan Howard turned, people wanted to dig into his pockets. Howard's bank account just skyrocketed like one of those home runs he deposits into the upper deck. Baseball's best bargain finally will be getting big bucks. Howard won his salary arbitration case against the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday when he was awarded $10 million, the highest figure given a victorious player. Now teammates expect him to pay for their meals and pick up the tab on their nights out. "My reaction is mostly relief," Howard said. "It was an interesting process. Anyway you look at it, it's a win-win because it's a substantial raise." Howard made $900,000 last year and $355,000 during his MVP season in 2006. The Phillies offered $7 million, but Howard became the first player to win in six arbitration cases this season.
